Good News

Today's post rather wordy but please bear with me. ~~Mom made me~~ I want to share this good news with every buddy.

You might remember that after the dental scaling I had last Dec 2011, the Vet told us that something in my throat appeared reddish? We went back one month later in mid-Jan 2012 for a review (same Vet 'A'). I was not somebuddy that would just open my mouth and let others peer inside! *gosh, what are the humans thinking??!* So they tried very hard to open my mouth and Vet 'A' only managed to catch a glimpse of my tonsil and that it was red!

The advice then was to put me on some antibiotics as the tonsils were probably inflamed. We were to go back again for review in 1 month's time. Mom asked what would happen if in 1 month's time the tonsil/s still red or swollen? Vet's answer sent Mom's blood pressure up the ceiling she nearly had heart attack! He said he would sedate me to have a proper look at my throat. If tonsil/s still red, might have to have it/them removed!! *WHAT????* The rest of sentences were just like background noises in Mom's ears..."might be cancerous"...was the only thing she heard.

Mom worried about my throat for the next 1 month (which felt like a year, she said). She typed furiously on the keyboard Googling for some answers..explanations. Finally she decided to have a 2nd opinion and went to Vet 'B' earlier this month. I was sedated for a quick look and indeed one of my tonsils was STILL inflamed. But there is no such extreme need for removal of the tonsil!! *Thank God!* I was given an antibiotic injection plus medications and sent home. Mommy could finally worry less as there would be no need for surgery.

We went back for review 2 weeks later, which was last Sunday. I was sedated again :(. 10 minutes later Vet carried me out and told my Pawrents that the inflammation had gone away! Mom asked "so it's back to normal now?". Vet answered "his throat is now even better than mine!". BOL!

I am free from antibiotics and Mommy is happy!

Note from Mommy: I learnt from these past 2 vet visits that to be sedated is different from under anaesthetic. Sedation is only a quick inhaling of gas (very little amount) so the subject 'sleeps' for a very short time. Silly me, I thought they are interchangeable terms!

I use a human toothbrush. Mommy says she and Daddy are also using the same kind of toothbrush and she finds the tapering bristles very good at reaching the gum line area. Most importantly, the bristles are soft enough! The cost is easy on the pocket too BOL!

That long orange color thing is a nail file for humans. From the $2 shop, a pack comes in 2 filers.

Again cheap and good!

As much as I hate it, I still want to have a set of sparkling white and strong teeth. So no choice but to endure the ~~torture~~ brushing! AND nail-cutting.

Yup, I am made to stand on that inverted basket while bathing. ~~Torture Upgraded!~~ Mommy's excuse for this 'upgrade' is that I like to lick. She's worried that I might drink up all the dirty bubbly bath water if I am left on the shower floor. Duh! Excuses!

(Must give credit to Mommy: she puts an extra rubber mat for me so that my paws are more comfy).

(From Bowie's Mommy: "Luckily he's a small dog. Otherwise I do not know where to get a huge basket for him! He licks my hands and legs too when I'm shampooing him. He licks the shower screen too!" *faint*)

But the ULTIMATE torture of this whole bath thingy is ... ...?

Yup! The killer dryer!!! Which idi*t invented it? $%^&@#

Personal Hygiene and Grooming - Part 2

When my cleaning 'torture' is done, next would be my Daily Grooming & Brushing.

Truthfully, I quite enjoy the fur brushing (except for the muzzle area!). Maybe it's partly due to the pin brush used? It has 360-degree rotational pins so they don't pull on hairs.

Oh, my fur brushing is done with me in Down position ('cos I'm a lazy bum BOL). So when Mom needs to brush my legs, she touches my leg lightly and I will auto stretch out my legs like this:

The underbody areas must not be forgotten!

Done! ... and it's rest time. I need to catch my breath from my walkie y'know?

Here's a peek at my grooming stuff:

The box was previously a individually-packed-biscuits' container. We can't remember how long it's been my grooming box...still good and steady. The round jar and rectangular box above the slicker brush are my skin creams for skin ouchies. The scissors is for the paw pads' fur in between visits by professional groomer.

After every walk / vet visit / any outing, I would go through this ~~torture~~ cleaning routine:

(1) - wipe all hands and feet with wet wipes.
(2) - wipe whole body especially chest, belly, inner thighs & butt with a damp cloth.
(3) - wipe whole body AGAIN with a dry cloth. (*whispering* Mommy says mold will grow on my skin if it is not wiped dry! Yea, yea...as if!)

Simply wipe with a damp cloth if using dry treats or kibbles. The game can also be frozen if you want to make frozen treats (this I have not tried).

The treat holes can be covered with bone-shaped covers (not shown here but they come as a set) to increase the difficulty level.

Health Exam 2011 - Part 2

As mentioned in my post here, this morning I went for my scheduled dental scaling and at the same time finding out more about the pain in my throat.

My pawrents left me at the vet's at 9.40am. They came back for me at 10.30am (same day) and I was already waiting for them at the back room. Vet's report to Mommy:

No teeth extracted. "All teeth strong". (OMD! Mommy was quite surprised yet secretly happy about it).
Throat pain due to redness at the tip of Epiglottis*.

* Nothing to be done for now. To go back for review in a month's time. Then, will also run a urine test again to see whether my urinary tract infection is gone or not.

So, I was brought out and handed over to Mommy in my own personal crate that Mommy left at the clinic. I was already awake from the anaesthetic effect but not fully awake.

How I looked (taken after reaching home):

My head, face and upper chest area were all wet!

Still groggy with heavy eyelids. Not much response too.

My limbs were still weak and wobbly. When I could walked a little, it was wobbly. I recovered strength only at 3+pm after zzzzzz-ing.

There was also an embarassing incident. I plonked down on one of my beds and Daddy noticed some wet spots where I laid. Mommy touched and realized it was from my private part. So they quickly moved me onto the tiled floor. Before long, I was leaking pee. At first it was just a small puddle, then Mommy decided that she might as well cleaned up just once so she helped me by slightly pressing on my bladder. Ooooosshh....boy, my bladder was relieved! But gosh, where did all those water come from???!! Anyway, it was all good after that.

Now I am back to my usual self and my appetite has come back too (had to fast since 10pm last night and no appetite when I was still groggy earlier)! Yay!

Health Exam 2011 - Part 1

Last Sunday I was at the 3-letter place: V..E..T !

As I've joined the rank of Senior Citizens (8.5 years old now), Mommy wants a FULL health check on me that included both blood and urine tests. Boy, was I nervous that even the vet thought I was one of the most (if not the most!) nervous dog he'd come across! I grabbed at Daddy's arms till they were full of scratches; you see, I was SO nervous that he had to help being the vet's assistant! Mommy stayed clear of me as she had to keep her head cool to listen to what the vet had to say & to ask questions.

"I'm sorry Daddy!" :(

RESULTS: Unfortunately I did not score 100%:

Both eyes starting with mild cataracts. Slight tearing which is fine.
Left ear slightly painful when 'poked' (I'm sure 'poke' is not the correct word to use but that sure looked like what the vet was doing to me!). However, both ears were extremely clean.
Vet commented that my teeth were "solid" (that's his exact word!) although they've got tartar*. Hopefully they'll turn out to be really solid upon closer examination*.
My throat* was painful when it was pressed but I would not allow vet to check further into it.
Limbs were fine; vet commented my hind legs were full of muscles (Mom told him I got that from all the jumping up on people..ahem!).
Heart murmur detected! Oh gosh! But I've yet to show ~~any~~ much symptom *paws crossed*
Anal gland expressed ... erm.., seemed Mommy had not done too well on this!

* I've been scheduled for what's going to be my first ever dental scaling this Sunday! While under general anaesthesia, vet will also check on my throat. Mommy is praying that at most let it be just an infection if there's anything wrong with it.

Blood and urine test results were out the following day:

Liver enzymes high :(
There's urinary tract infection :( (prescribed antibiotics).

After blood samples were drawn, my arms:

The bruised area was bigger and worse than seen in the pics; it's not yet gone as at today! It was my fault as I kept moving due to my nervousness :'(

My beds were cluttered together because Mommy spotted a house lizard in the bedroom! She is terrified of them. So she moved my beds far away just in case it got INTO them.

My Staircase

Mommy says that I am now a Senior Citizen (for doggie's age) (HELLO??! Me? Senior?) so I should start taking care of my joints. Leaping up/down furnitures should be minimal. Our sofa's height is still manageable for me but the peeps' bed is slightly too high for a shorty like me. I like to start of my night's sleep on my peeps' bed, then after getting warmed up I'd like to get down onto my own bed or the cooling tiled floor. This has greatly reduced Mom's quality of sleep as she has to get up to carry me up/down. This can happen at least 2 times every night....so Mom's been having some complaints 'bout it :P

So she's been thinking of getting a pet staircase for me but it doesn't seem to be available locally *headache*. So she jumped at the chance when recently my Aunt Lin (Mom's sister) was going to New York! Mom searched online and ordered for a Pet Gear pet stairs to be delivered to Aunt Lin's hotel. It is to be self-assembled so Aunt Lin brought it back in her big luggage.

*Woof! Thank you Aunt Lin! Muack!* But I do think that I can do without it though.

Note from Bowie's Mommy:

When there's any chance he'll avoid using the stairs. So we have to cut off his access to the sofa by blocking with whatever stuff available so that he can use only the stairs! Sometimes he'll just use it all by himself, other times still need to coax him. He seems to be better at going down and hesitant going up...hmm.

It is claimed that the stairs can hold pets up to 75lbs but I very much doubt so as it is already slightly wobbly for Bowie at 17lbs! But to be fair, it could be because Bowie sort of bounce on the steps rather than walking on them; as though he wants to get over them quick LOL.

This is quite a rare post showing photos of my walk because if Mommy is walking me by herself, it'd be quite impossible for her to take pics of me. Cos' she'd never let me off leash fearing I might just dash off ~~cos' I am bad with Recall~~ so with 1 hand grabbing my leash ~~(with me pulling at the other end)~~ and the other holding the camera, it'd be quite hard to take decent pics. But last Sunday, Daddy joined us for my walkie so he could hold my leash instead of Mommy.

Flooding in Bangkok ~ Need Donation, Volunteers, Food...

This is probably one of the worst flooding in Bangkok,Thailand. Death toll is up to 506. There is an emergency to come to the aid of dogs that are being abandoned in areas that are heavily flood. A wonderful organization in Thailand~ Sol Dog~ is a rescue group trying to save all these dogs and get them out of harms way. They need money, volunteers, and food. Please help spread the word and help another animal.

Another New Tank Top

Bright orange colour to brighten up what I originally thought was going to be a lazy Sunday! Due to heavy rain in the early morning, I did not have my usual morning walk today. Daddy was out but when he came back in the early afternoon, he suggested that all 3 of us (he, Mommy and Me) go for a walk as the ground was no longer wet and there was a bit of sun. Post on this walk will be for another day.

Today I just wanna show my new orange top hehehe...

I've got another piece in exactly same design (silly Mommy!) but in bright green and a couple more different ones. Will take pics when I feel like posing for the camera BOL.

Pee-S: Mommy said I have not been smiling much ever since my grooming the other day and the above pics can proof that. Hmm...true! Maybe my smiles had been clipped off!

I get groomed about every 3 months by a professional groomer who does home visits. The last one was just 2 days ago. How do I look?

Mommy thinks I look like a giant Chihuahua now.

Mommy was eyeing the below tall bowl cum stand. There are several bright colors available:

Butt as always, nice things involve international shipping & that means it'll cost a bomb!

So that's when Mommy looks for ~~cheap~~ cheaper alternatives.

Inverted empty ice cream tub. A bit wobbly but who cares.

The slimmer red tub is of better height butt risks toppling over when I become ~~berserk~~ overly excited if the meal comes with wet food! So that's when the white square one has to be used as it's more stable.

It actually a plastic basin for washing face, for kids! Mom got it from a $2 store (that's about USD1.50).

*Mommy typed the title of this post.*

Er...what again? I saw my name in the title! Bowie-saur...kinda familiar..!

Dino-saur! It's been extinct fur like my-hairs-are-not-enough-for-counting-the-number of years!!!!!

*Mom: "See the circled part on the above photo? Does it look similar to the back of the creature in the photo below?"

*Mom: "The creature is called Ouranosaurus, so Wikipedia says."

Now I know!

Anyway, why does this tank top has such uncanny similarity to that fearful looking creature? It's all the work of Mommy. The tank top has been so 'seasoned' that it has stretched and become too loose. As Mommy does not have any sewing machine, she thought the easiest way to make it fit ~~without any major alteration~~ was to pinch the excess bits from the back and (hand-)sewed it straight down! So here we are.

Don't worry, she sewn it with the clothes off my back; I was not hurt in the process BOL

Puppy Me - Part 3

I posted a photo of puppy-me last year and earlier this year. Here's more:

12th day when I first came home. Somehow I got the "Sit" right all by myself while waiting for my food.

My grooming station then. That was a plastic basin inverted over a stool and Mommy would turn it around (like a lazy susan) using it like a ~~real~~ grooming table. It was a horrendous experience!!! But I behaved well and was soon upgraded to being groomed lying on the floor.

I was so tiny then that I could fit inside the basin, look!

NOW, see how much I've grown:

Yup, it is the very same basin.

Besides growing in size, Mommy says I've also grown to be more timid. This is the nearest Mommy could ~~put~~ make me near that basin NOW, let alone lying in it!

Yummy Durian

Yes! Finally after quite a long wait I got to taste the heavenly fruit again! It is Durian, also known as the King of Fruits in Southeast Asia.

"The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour, strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and offensive. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as almonds, rotten onions, turpentine and gym socks. For hoomans, it is either they love it or they hate it. Personally I think us doggies would love it due to its strong aroma. Santa (and her gang) has previously blogged about this same fruit before here. Today it is my turn.

This is the flesh (wrapping the seeds) already removed from their spikey shell. Santa has a nice photo of the flesh still in the shell, do go over to view.

How I'd wish videos can capture aroma too so you furriends can smell it and decide if you'd like it!

Right now, there are at least 12,000 bears suffering in Asia. They are held captive in tiny cages and shocking conditions. These bears are farmed needlessly for the bile contained in their gall bladders which is used to make Traditional Asian Medicine. Their reality is a lifetime of suffering and pain.

Have you heard about Freekibble and its companion site,Freekibblekat? They were founded three years ago by Mimi Ausland who was 11 years old at the time.

Mimi started volunteering at her local shelter and realized that the organization and others like it often had trouble stocking enough food to feed the animals in their care. She and her parents launched the websites, which allow visitors to help by answering trivia questions about dogs and animals. Each day that a visitor clicks on a trivia question, the site donates 10 pieces of kibble to a needy shelter — even if the site visitor gets the answer wrong.

Be sure to tell your friends. If you have a website then please consider placing one of the Freekibble banners on it. Food is such a basic necessity and this is a way to help provide healthy food to hungry dogs and cats across the United States.

Versatile Blogger Award

Thank you Butters for passing me the Versatile Blogger Award! I'm supposed to share seven facts about my peeps and then pass the award on to fifteen new, or newly discovered, bloggers' hoomans. So here are seven things about my peeps:

1. Mommy is a SAHM (Stay-At-Home-Mom) to me and I am the only (fur)kid at home. They have no plans to have human kid(s) so there's no fear of fighting due to jealousy BOL.

2. Mommy was an Accountant before being a SAHM. Studied at a university in Perth, Western Australia. Coincidentally, I was also born in Western Australia!

3. I'm my peeps' first dog. Actually there was a Chihuahua before me, but he was super sticky that he'd whined and cried even as Mom left him alone just to get a drink from the kitchen!! She almost had nervous breakdown even though he was only with them for about a week. Luckily his previous owner was most happy to have him back (and kept him for good after that!). Mom cried on the day they returned the Chihuahua whom they named Chino. I joined this family 3-4 months after that. That was Year 2003, Sep 6.

4. Mommy is more doting on me than Daddy. She protects me more while Daddy thinks that she's spoiling me bad! When Daddy chases me in play, I always run to Mom for cover.

5. Mommy got interested in bread-making these past 2 years, with the help of a breadmaker machine of course. She doesn't go to any baking class but self learnt from others' blogs. Sadly none of the yeasty smelling dough ended up in my tummy!

6. Food blogs are the other items of interest that appear in Mommy's Google Reader besides our doggies' blogs.

7. We do not have the luxury of owning a car as it is too expensive here where we live (an average 1600cc japanese car costs maybe about USD70,000 before other expenses...just an approximation as I know nuts about cars). So we always travel in cab, with me in a crate, when going for visits to vet etc.

King's Bed

Am not referring to the size of the bed. Am talking about moi, the KING, in ~~my hoomans'~~ my bed!

Mommy ~~threatened~~ warned me that I MUST hide her face or else!

This is how I like to stick my butt and back to Mom!

So comfy!

This is Daddy's side of the bed where I usually take over (after he'd left to work early in the mornings). My back is in line with the pillow ... ... somehow I love to do that, even sleeping on the floor being in line with the wall.

One thing I want to mention is the mattress. It's a rather new one being used only from Feb this year, and Mom actually won it in a lucky draw (if only it's a Toto she won! *day dreaming*). It's a Serta Hotel Collection - Grand Suite mattress. It is 14" (34cm) thick plus the bed frame's height about 10" (25cm), total height is a whopping 24" (59cm) which is a lot for this small doggie here. First time I tried jumping up this new bed, I slided back down to the floor after slamming the side of the mattress!! Our old mattress was 4" (10cm) shorter... I had started to have problem jumping even that height ~~due to age~~ I don't know why.

From then on my hoomans will carry me up and down the bed ~~like a king~~ whenever I want to go up or down. There are times that I'll just go up/down on my own as I'm a daredevil! BOL and that sends Mom's heart pumping hard. Not a perfect jump up the bed, I'll still be like hanging at the edge of a cliff using my biceps to pull up my hind legs. She's just so scared that I'll break my skinny lil' legs one day :P
